A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (1-3, 1-1 MIAC) earned its first win of the season with a hard-fought 69-65 victory at Gustavus Adolphus Dec. 1 in St. Peter. Junior Seth Marx (Maple Grove, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) led SJU (1-3, 1-1 MIAC) with 32 points, including eight three-pointers, both of which were career highs. He finished 9-for-13 from the floor, eight of 11 from three-point range, and 6-for-6 from the free-throw line with nine rebounds and two blocks. Marx drained two free throws with nine seconds left to seal the win, which is just the Johnnies' third in their last 13 trips to St. Peter. SJU led 35-27 at the half, but Gustavus (1-3, 0-2 MIAC) started the second half with a 10-1 run to take a 37-36 lead. The game was tied on six more occasions before the Johnnies gained an eight-point lead (67-59) on a trey from Marx with 3:05 left. Senior Chris Neumann (Winsted, Minn./Holy Trinity) added 12 points on six-for-seven shooting and eight rebounds, while junior Nick Meyer (Plymouth, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) added eight points. Junior Kevin McKenzie (De Pere, Wis./Notre Dame Academy) collected four points, six assists and two steals with no turnovers. SJU committed only five turnovers in the game, two of which occurred in the final minutes. The visitors shot 51 percent (26-for-51) in the game, including 53.3 percent (8-for-15) from beyond the arc.

A LOOK AT THE KNIGHTS: Senior Tom Sawatzke drained the game-winning three pointer with 2.1 seconds remaining to lift Carleton (3-1, 1-0 MIAC) to a 64-62 victory over Bethel Dec. 1 in Northfield. It was Sawatzke's second game-winner over the last eight days and the second time in as many meetings against Bethel. Sawatzke's trey topped Division II program Hawaii Pacific, 74-71, with a long fadeaway at the buzzer Nov. 24. On Jan. 30, 2012, his triple as time expired bested Bethel by a 54-52 score. Down 8-0 to start the game, Carleton battled back and eventually carried a 33-31 advantage into halftime. The second half remained close, with neither team leading by more than six points. The squads combined for 17 lead changes in the contest. The Knights won the rebounding battle (37-31) and went a perfect 16-for-16 at the charity stripe. Senior Scott Theisen collected a game-high 21 points, seven assists, six rebounds and a steal, while Sawatzke finished with 14 points. Sawatzke leads the team with an average of 19.8 points per game, followed by Theisen (14.3 ppg. and 6.3 rpg.) and junior Taylor Hanson (9.8 ppg. and 7.5 rpg.).

MOST RECENT CLASH: SJU built a 17-point halftime lead and held on for a 57-56 win over Carleton last Jan. 28 in Collegeville. The Johnnies held the Knights to just four field goals (25.0 percent, 4-for-16) and scored 12 points off eight turnovers en route to a 33-16 lead at the half. Carleton, however, outscored its hosts by a 38-20 margin to take a one-point lead (54-53) with 3:21 remaining. Senior Chris Orgas (Lakeville, Minn./North) scored two of his career-high 10 points to give the lead back to the Johnnies for good on SJU's next possession. Aaron Barmore '12 nailed a jumper to make it 57-54 with 1:28 left, but a put-back from Danny Geiger cut the lead back to one with under a minute to play. Barmore's desperation effort as the shot clock expired gave Carleton one last possession with 17 seconds remaining, but Tom Sawatzke's deep three-pointer missed everything as the horn sounded. Barmore led SJU with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Andy Burns '12 added 13 points and four assists. Sawatzke tallied 19 points to lead all scorers, including 16 in the second half alone. He posted three points on 0-for-6 shooting in the first half. Caleb Rosenow added 17 points, 10 rebounds and six turnovers. The Knights shot 68.0 percent (17-for-25) from the field in the second half. The two teams combined for a 16-for-28 showing (.571) from the free-throw line. SJU totaled a 14-6 scoring advantage off turnovers and was whistled for 21 fouls (to 11 for Carleton).

SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies leads the series with a 36-28 record under the direction of Jim Smith, but are 14-18 record on the Knights' court. SJU is 3-7 in its last 10 games at West Gymnasium.
