MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Saint John's dropped its third consecutive conference game, 3-1, at Augsburg on Thursday, Nov. 15.
Thomas Paine gave Augsburg (2-4, 1-0 MIAC) a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal 4:16 into the second period and Derek Loisel gave the home team a two-goal lead 7:16 later.
Junior Justin Hochsprung (Alexandria, Minn.) put SJU (1-4-1, 0-3-0 MIAC) on the scoreboard with the put-back of senior Jascha Pettit's (Wadena, Minn.) shot with 3:26 left in the second frame. The goal was Hochsprung's first of the season and his 15th career point.
Loisel padded the Auggies' lead to 3-1 with his second goal of the game 8:28 into the third period.
Freshman Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 26 saves in the loss.
SJU was 0-for-2 on the power play and is now 0-for-12 since its power-play goal in the second period of the 2-2 tie against Wisconsin-Stout Nov. 2. The Johnnies mustered five shots on net during a five-minute power play that started 1:25 into the game, but could not score. The Johnnies have scored only one goal on their last 45 shots on net.
The Johnnies return home to host the Auggies for the return game at 7 p.m. this Saturday, Nov. 17, at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
