Johnnie Swimmers Set for Full Weekend of Competition

Saint John's swimming and diving is set for a full weekend of competition, beginning with a dual against NCAA Division II St. Cloud State this Friday, Jan. 20. The meet is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Halenbeck Hall Pool in St. Cloud. The Johnnies then travel to compete at the Meet of Saints, hosted by St. Thomas, on Saturday, Jan. 21, in St. Paul.

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: SJU defeated Carleton 155-143 in dual-meet competition last Saturday, Jan. 14, in Northfield. The Johnnies won seven of the 16 events, but finished second in the other eight events, including six in which SJU claimed both second and third. Senior Josh Seaburg (Moorhead, Minn.) claimed wins in the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.37), 200-yard individual medley (2:04.31) and 500-yard freestyle (4:55.94). Seniors Wes Schlichting (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) and Kelley Burg (Grand Forks, N.D./Sacred Heart) claimed first and second in the 1- (311.10, 218.60) and 3-meter dives (252.55, 204.55), respectively. Freshman Connor Franta (La Crescent, Minn.) won both the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.60) and 1,000-yard freestyle (10:42.77).

LAST YEAR vs. SCSU: St. Cloud State defeated the Johnnies by a score of 186-112 last Jan. 21 in Collegeville. SJU won six events in the loss. Seaburg, Michael Williams '11 and senior Jimmy Foley (Moorhead, Minn.) claimed first (1:47.91), second (1:47.97) and third (1:48.50), respectively, in the 200-yard freestyle. Williams won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:03.42. Andy Happe '11 won both the 50- (26:04) and 100-yard backstroke (55.67). Senior Ty Nimens (Crookston, Minn.) won the 100-yard freestyle (48.99).

LAST YEAR at UST: SJU finished fourth out of four teams at the competitive Meet of Saints held last Jan. 22 in St. Paul. St. Cloud State won the meet with a total of 702 points, followed by St. Thomas (690), St. Olaf (630) and SJU (466). The Johnnies claimed 12 top-five finishes on the afternoon. Seaburg finished second in the 500-yard freestyle with a season-best time of his own, 4:51.93. Nimens and Williams finished third (48.01) and fourth (48.13), respectively, in the 100-yard freestyle. Nimens took third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.38), while Williams finished fifth (22.21) in the 50-yard freestyle. Happe took fifth in the 100-yard backstroke (56.62). Schlichting claimed fourth with season-best marks in both the 1- (299.90) and 3-meter (291.30) dives.
