The nationally-ranked SJU golf team takes on St. Cloud State for its annual dual at 2 p.m. today at Territory G.C. in St. Cloud.
A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Today is the Johnnies' first competition in Minnesota since October. The team fell to Division I High Point (N.C.) in match play, 9.5-8.5, on March 16.
A LOOK AT THE HUSKIES: St. Cloud State shot a final round 319 and fell to third place on the final day of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Championship played on April 8-10. The Huskies were in first place with a three-stroke lead heading into the final round. The Championship consisted of five rounds, with two played in the fall and three played over the weekend. Freshman Devin Holmes tied for seventh in the individual standings after firing a final round 74. He finished the tournament with a 378 (+23). Sophomore Gordy Diekman and junior Beau Anderson finished at 387 (+32) for the tournament. Senior Justin Nelson shot a final round 83 to finish at 400 and senior Alex Dawald carded an 83.
LAST YEAR: SJU finished second out of three teams at the SJU Triangular last season. St. Cloud State won the meet with a 10-over par 298, followed closely by SJU (299, +11), and Bemidji State (300, +12). The Huskies were led by Evan Peters, who fired a five-under par 67. SJU defeated St. Cloud State in match play, 7-4. Junior Tony Krogen (Marshall, Minn.) tied for second overall with an even-par 72, while senior Ben Cahill (Grand Rapids, Minn.) and sophomore Mark Giorgi (Red Wing, Minn.) followed with a 74 (+2) and 76 (+4) respectively. Junior Alex Klehr (Mankato, Minn./West) rounded out the Johnnies' five with a 78 (+6).
NATIONAL POLL: The Johnnies were ranked third nationally in the first Golf World/Nike Golf Division III Coaches' Poll of the spring season released April 6.
