ST. PAUL, Minn. – Saint John's snapped eighth-ranked Hamline's 11-game unbeaten streak and handed the host Pipers their first MIAC loss with a 3-1 win Thursday, Feb. 3, in St. Paul.
Junior Tony Civello (Shoreview, Minn.) had a spectacular game in net, stopping 40 of the 41 shots he faced, including 13 saves on the power play. He now has a .963 save percentage (103-107) over his last three starts (2-0-1 record).
The Johnnies' power-play crew, meanwhile, was 2-for-5 against the MIAC's (conference games only) top penalty kill (88.0 percent, 44-50). SJU (5-14-1, 4-6-1 MIAC) entered the game with the worst power play (8.7 percent, 4-46) in the conference.
Hamline (12-4-4, 7-1-3 MIAC) found the scoreboard first on a goal from Ryan Kupperman 9:20 into the game. SJU, however, scored three unanswered goals to claim the win.
Freshman James Saintey (Rosemount, Minn.) tied the game with a power-play goal 6:01 into the second period. Sophomores Joe Harren (Warroad, Minn.) and Michael Palmiscno (East Grand Forks, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play for SJU.
Senior Alex Lindeberg (Forest Lake, Minn.) scored his first goal of the season, what proved to be the game-winner, at the 14:04 mark of the second. Assists were credited to seniors Grant Ellena (Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Pat McClure (Maple Plain, Minn.). Ellena has now tallied a point (2g/3a) in each of his last four games.
Senior Mike Wallgren (Oakdale, Minn.) sealed the victory with an empty-net, power-play goal at the 18:49 mark of the third period, with assist going to fellow co-captain Brent Brodersen (Shakopee, Minn.).
The Johnnies return home to host the Pipers for a 7 p.m. puck-drop Saturday, Feb. 5, at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
