ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint Mary's made the most of its scoring chances to defeat Saint John's 4-3 on Saturday, Feb. 12, in St. Cloud.

SMU (5-15-2, 4-7-2 MIAC) scored three goals on seven shots in the first period to take a 3-1 lead into the second. Bobby Thompson scored on the power play 7:56 into the game to give the Cardinals an early 1-0 lead.

Senior Alex Lindeberg (Forest Lake, Minn.) tied the game with an unassisted goal 50 seconds later. Lindeberg stole the puck from a SMU defender behind the net, and then snuck it past the goaltender for a wrap-around goal.

The Cardinals re-gained the lead four minutes later and extended it to 3-1 with a surprise tally with two seconds left in the period.

Senior Brent Brodersen (Shakopee, Minn.) cut the deficit to 3-2 with a wicked slap shot 6:50 into the second period. Freshman Trent Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) was credited with one of his two assists on the evening.

Just as SMU had done the period before, sophomore Jascha Pettit (Wadena, Minn.) tallied a goal with two seconds left in the period, on the power play, to tie the game at 3-3. Johnson and sophomore Joe Harren (Warroad, Minn.) recorded the assists.

Nick Nagel scored the eventual game-winner 7:15 into the third period with a wrap-around shot.
