Nordic Ski Team Begins Season With A Win

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's University freshman Kellen Witschen (Aurora, Minn./Mesabi East) won the four-person sprint to the finish to earn his first collegiate victory in his first race as the Johnnies won the three-team Saints Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 9, in Collegeville.

Witschen won the 12k race with a time of 35:40, the length of a ski boot ahead of teammate and senior captain Jared Sundstrom (Proctor, Minn.), who claimed second.

Senior Adam Johnson (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) finished 11th (38:25) to earn 10 team points for a total of 39, three ahead of Gustavus Adolphus. St. Olaf ended in third with 22 points.

Freshman Nate Engel (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata), sophomore Charlie Ward (Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville Area) and sophomore Ethan Evenson (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale) finished 14th (38:58), 15th (39:39) and 16th (40:42), respectively.

The Johnnies return to action next Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 15-16, at an NCAA qualifier in Duluth.
