ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – Saint John's extended a 12-point halftime lead to as much as 32 in a 77-53 win at Bethel on Monday, Jan. 31.
Senior Aaron Burtzel (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) tallied four assists to pass assistant coach Matt Ohme '07 to become the school's all-time leader with 368.
Junior Andy Burns (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) led the Johnnies (9-9, 5-8 MIAC) with 13 points on a perfect 3-for-3 night from behind the arc (4-for-4 at the free-throw line).
Ahead by 14 with 15:38 left in the game, SJU scored 10 points on one trip down to its offensive end. Following a made basket, Burns stripped the ball and went hard to the basket and was fouled. The foul was ruled intentional and a Royal was called for two technical fouls and ejected from the game. Junior Aaron Barmore (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) made all four free throws resulting from the technicals, and Burns made his two. Barmore then hit a jumper from the extra possession.
Christian Skinner led the Royals (6-13, 3-11 MIAC) with 10 points.
The Johnnies return home to host Carleton this Wednesday, Feb. 2. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Sexton Arena in Collegeville.
