Johnnies Set for Busy Weekend

The Johnnie swimming and diving team has a pair of competitions this weekend, beginning with a dual against St. Cloud State at 6 p.m. tonight. SJU then travels to compete at the four-team St. Thomas Invitational at 1 p.m. Saturday in St. Paul. 

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's earned victories in 12 events to win a home triangular on Jan. 15 in Collegeville. SJU accumulated a total of 699 points, followed by Carleton (596) and Macalester (159). Junior Ty Nimens (Crookston, Minn.) won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.68, and later went 1-2 with junior Jimmy Foley (Moorhead, Minn.) in the 200-yard freestyle. Foley claimed first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:59.49. Junior Jesse Otis (West Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) won both the 100- (1:03.65) and 200-yard (2:21.21) breaststroke, while sophomore Ben Maakestad (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) won the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:05.15). Freshman Mando Moss (New Providence, Bahamas/St. Augustine's) won the 100-yard butterfly (53.20) and junior Josh Seaburg (Moorhead, Minn.) won the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.11) and 200-yard individual medley (2:04.18). Junior Wes Schlichting (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) and senior Marcus Rien (Richmond, Minn./Rocori) went 1-2 in the 1-meter dive. Schlichting also won the 3-meter dive with a score of 271.70. The Johnnies' 400-yard freestyle relay team consisting of Moss, Nimens, freshman Alex Gernes (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) and senior Michael Williams (Maple Grove, Minn.), won the event with a time of 3:14.79.

AMONG THE MIAC'S BEST: A number of Johnnies were listed in the top five of the MIAC's best times released Jan. 18. Mando Moss leads the MIAC in the 100-yard freestyle (47.35), while Ty Nimens is close behind in second (47.48). Moss is also fourth in both the 50-yard freestyle (21.90) and the 100-yard butterfly (53.20). Josh Seaburg currently boasts the fifth-best time in three different events: 200-yard butterfly (2:02.11), 400-yard individual medley (4:20.61) and 500-yard freestyle (4:55.62). On the boards, Wes Schlichting is second and fourth in the 3-meter (271.70) and 1-meter (245.15) dives, respectively. Marcus Rien is fifth with a score of 243.95 in the 1-meter dive.
