The Johnnie soccer team (2-2-3, 1-0-2 MIAC) travels to face St. Thomas for a 4 p.m. match today in St. Paul.
A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: In its most recent match, Saint John's traveled to Gustavus Adolphus and played the Gusties to a scoreless 0-0 tie last Saturday, Sept. 25, in St. Peter. Senior Matt Anderson (Eden Prairie, Minn.) made six saves in the first 67:51 of the match before being relieved in net by junior Mike Sikich (Apple Valley, Minn.), who made two stops. Freshman Michael Coborn (St. Cloud, Minn.) led SJU (2-2-3, 1-0-2 MIAC) with two shots on goal. Senior Clash Lo (St. Paul, Minn./Tartan) added the other.
A LOOK AT THE TOMMIES: St. Thomas (4-4-1, 0-1-1 MIAC) is coming off of a 2-2 tie against Bethel on Saturday. Previous to the Bethel match-up, the Tommies had lost three matches in a row to Wis.-Superior, Augsburg and St. Scholastica. Senior Elliot Amundson and junior Mike Hutton (3g/1a) and currently lead UST with seven points apiece. Senior Alex Benson has played all 854 minutes in net this season and holds a .771 save percentage with a 1.16 GAA.
THE LAST MEETING: Saint John's dropped a 3-2 decision to St. Thomas last Oct. 21, 2009, in Collegeville. Brett Day gave UST an early 1-0 lead 16:47 into the match before senior Andre Blaine (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) tied the game with his first career goal 14:02 into the second half. Senior Kevin Saunders (Hastings, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play for SJU. Four minutes later, the Johnnies scored again, giving them a 2-1 lead. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Tommies' Reid Moser-Bliel scored a header off a corner kick less than three minutes later. Admundson then tallied the game-winner at the 83:43 mark.
