Johnnies Provide Strong Showing at ASU

TEMPE, Ariz. – Saint John's fell to NCAA Division I Arizona State 298-307 on the Sun Devils' own course, the Karsten Golf Course (par 71, 7,057 yards), on Tuesday, April 6, in Tempe, Ariz.

Senior Ben Vangsness (Alexandria, Minn.) led SJU with a two-over par 73, while sophomore Tony Krogen (Marshall, Minn.) fired a 76 (+5). Junior Ben Cahill (Grand Rapids, Minn.) followed with a 78 (+7) and freshmen Andy Stahlman (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) and Mark Giorgi (Red Wing, Minn.) tallied an 80 (+9) and 84 (+13), respectively, to round out the Johnnies' starting five.

The meet was the first spring competition for SJU, which was ranked No. 7 in the latest Golf World Division III poll released March 17.

As individuals, sophomore Alex Klehr (Mankato, Minn./West) shot an 83 (+12), while sophomore Alex Wallerich (Lake City, Minn.) and junior Will Wahlers (Eden Prairie, Minn.) followed with an 87 (+16) and 89 (+18), respectively.

ASU's five golfers used the day's round to qualify for the team's representation at this weekend's U.S. Intercollegiate Golf Tournament at Stanford.

The Johnnies return to action Wednesday, April 14, against NCAA Division II Bemidji State and St. Cloud State. The triangular is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the Territory G.C. in St. Cloud.
