Johnnie Hockey Ends Season With Loss at St. Olaf

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Saint John's ended its 2009-10 hockey season with an 8-3 loss at St. Olaf on Saturday, Feb. 20, in Northfield.

The Oles (12-9-4, 6-6-4 MIAC) took a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal 42 seconds into the contest and added another goal at the 15:37 mark to make it 2-0 at the end of the first period.

St. Olaf added three more goals before the Johnnies (9-12-4, 5-9-2 MIAC) got on the scoreboard with back-to-back goals 18 seconds apart from sophomore Grant Ellena (Coon Rapids, Minn.) and senior Karl Gilbert (Hermantown, Minn.).

STO added three more power-play goals in the third before senior Dylan Decker (Park City, Utah) ended the scoring with a shorthanded tally with 4:45 left.

Sophomore Tony Civello (Shoreview, Minn.) made eight saves on 11 shots thru the first 24 minutes before being relieved by senior Stu Van Ess (Kewaskum, Wis.), who made 14 stops the rest of the way.

Despite the lopsided 8-3 score, SJU actually out-shot the Oles 40-30 in the contest. The difference was special teams, as St. Olaf converted five of its nine power-play opportunities to the Johnnies' 1-for-7 outing. The two teams combined for 49 penalties and 181 minutes in the box.
