ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's earned its third straight victory with a 5-3 decision over St. Olaf on Friday, Feb. 19, in St. Cloud.
The host Johnnies (9-11-4, 5-8-2 MIAC) posted an early 2-0 lead with goals from senior Chris Murray (Chanhassen, Minn.) and freshman Michael Palmiscno (East Grand Forks, Minn.) 32 second apart in the seventh minute of the first period.
Ross Trousdale cut the deficit to 2-1 with a power-play tally at the 10:19 mark of the second period for St. Olaf (11-9-4, 5-6-4 MIAC).
Sophomore Grant Ellena (Coon Rapids, Minn.) answered quickly, however, with his seventh goal of the season 1:02 later to regain a two-goal lead for the Johnnies. Senior Gabriel Harren (Warroad, Minn.) posted his second assist of the game on the scoring play.
Sophomore Conor Rooney (Stillwater, Minn.) extended the lead to 4-1 with his eighth goal of the season 3:18 into the final frame. Junior Alex Lindeberg (Forest Lake, Minn.) and freshman Tobias Linbro (Nykvarn, Sweden) were credited with the assists. The assist was Linbro's first collegiate point.
The Oles made it interesting in the third period, however. Jack Nicoll cut the margin to 4-2 four minutes later and Britton Smith added a penalty-shot goal to make it 4-3 with 7:27 left.
Senior Karl Gilbert (Hermantown, Minn.) netted his team-leading 11th goal with 2:30 left to seal the win for SJU. Fellow senior Dylan Decker (Park City, Utah) earned the assist.
Senior Stu Van Ess (Kewaskum, Wis.) made 29 saves to earn the victory and improve his record to 6-5-3 on the season.
Senior Jake Koehler (Ramsey, Minn.) was the only senior not to earn a point on Senior Night.
The Johnnies end their 2009-10 season at St. Olaf on Saturday, Feb. 20. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Northfield Ice Arena.
