BLAINE, Minn. – Missed opportunities squandered Saint John's upset attempt in a 3-0 season-opening loss to No. 15 Hamline as part of the MIAC Showcase Friday, Oct. 29, in Blaine.
The Johnnies outshot the Pipers 27-22 in the game, including a 23-12 advantage in the second and third periods, but were 0-for-7 on the power play and 0-for-2 with a 5-on-3 advantage.
Hamline took a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal from Austun Tavis at the 14:49 mark of the first period. Sixteen seconds after SJU was unable to capitalize on a 1:46 5-on-3 power play, the Pipers' Brian Arrigoni increased the lead to 2-0. Ryan Kupperman ended the scoring with a breakaway goal less than six minutes later.
Sophomore
Adam Andersson (Pixbo, Sweden) made 19 saves in the loss. Freshman Justin Brausen (Little Canada, Minn.) led the Johnnies with six shots-on-goal.
The shutout loss is the first for the Johnnies since Nov. 3, 2007 (1-0 at Wis.-Eau Claire), a span of 75 games.
SJU returns to action this Saturday, Oct. 30, with another non-conference game against St. Olaf. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Fogerty Ice Arena in Blaine.
