A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Junior Aaron Burtzel (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) tallied the first recorded triple-double in school history as the Johnnies defeated Concordia-Moorhead 74-61 on Jan. 9 in Collegeville. Burtzel posted 16 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds along with a 7-for-9 shooting performance (.778) in the win. Junior Sam Blank (Rollingstone, Minn./Winona Cotter) led SJU (9-3, 6-1 MIAC) with 17 points off the bench, including 12 from behind the arc. Sophomore Aaron Barmore (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) added 15 points, while junior Todd Herman (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer) recorded 10 points off the bench. SJU, which led by as much as 22 with 8:56 remaining, shot 56.3 percent (27-48) from the floor and 58.3 percent (7-12) from three-point range in the contest. Concordia bounced back from its 33.3 percent performance in the first half by shooting 53.8 percent in the game's final 20 minutes. The Cobbers went on a 14-0 run to cut their deficit to eight at 60-52 with 4:15 left.

A LOOK AT THE PIPERS: Hamline's five-game winning streak was snapped by a 73-66 loss to Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday, Jan. 9. The Pipers (8-5, 4-4 MIAC) are led by senior Ray Brown, who is averaging 16.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Junior Carl Hipp is averaging close to a double-double with 16.6 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. SJU is 70-23 all-time against the Pipers under the direction of head coach Jim Smith.

LAST YEAR'S SEASON SERIES: SJU and Hamline split last season's series, with the home team earning the victory in each instance. In the teams' second meeting of the season, Hamline came away with an 82-62 victory on Feb. 14 in St. Paul. Junior Chris Schwartz (Sioux Falls, S.D./Lincoln) led the Johnnies with 16 points as SJU shot just 38.8 percent from the floor. Burtzel, stricken with foul trouble, posted five points and seven rebounds in just 15 minutes of play, which ended his double-double streak at three games. Eric Clute led the Pipers with 26 points off the bench, including 20 in the second half alone. Tony Thrasher added 19 points, while Hipp recorded 17 points and 15 rebounds as Hamline shot 59.2 percent in the game.

Earlier in the season, four Johnnies scored in double-figures to give Saint John's an 81-54 win over Hamline on Jan. 17 in Collegeville. Schwartz led SJU with 13 points, while sophomore wing Andrew Latzke (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) added 11. Barmore and Blank added 10 points apiece. Both teams combined for 42 turnovers on the day. The Johnnies scored 37 of their 81 points off of the Pipers' 22 turnovers in the contest.
