MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Saint John's opened MIAC play with a pair of shutouts (5-0, 3-0) over Macalester on Friday, March 27, at the H.H.H. Metrodome in Minneapolis.
In game one, SJU cracked four extra-base hits, including three triples. The Johnnies scored three runs on three consecutive hits in the top of the third inning, all with two outs. With junior Joe Eiden (Maple Grove, Minn./Totino-Grace) on first, sophomore Brian Skluzacek (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) laced an RBI double to right-center field to get the visitors on the scoreboard. An RBI single by freshman Matt Boys (Eden Prairie, Minn./Minnetonka) and an RBI triple by freshman Jimmy Loonan (Waseca, Minn.) increased the Johnnies' lead to 3-0.
SJU added two more runs in the top of the sixth via an RBI triple by sophomore Aaron Traut (St. Cloud, Minn./Rocori) and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Matt Butorac (Maple Grove, Minn.).
Senior Alex Wahl (Plymouth, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) went the distance for SJU, scattering six hits while striking out four to record the first complete-game shutout of his career. Wahl issued zero walks in the game.
A leadoff walk by Skluzacek, double from Boys and a sacrifice fly by Loonan gave the Johnnies an early 1-0 lead in game two. Butorac then blasted a two-run homer, the first of his career at SJU, in the sixth to pad the Johnnies' lead, 3-0.
Sophomore Brett Kramer (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) posted the complete-game shutout, allowing six hits while striking out seven. Both Wahl and Kramer are now 2-1 on the year.
The Johnnies are now 25-5 against the Scots since 1994.
With the pair of victories, SJU head coach Jerry Haugen is now nine wins shy of 600 for his career with a 591-506-5 (.539) record in 32 seasons.
SJU (7-7, 2-0 MIAC) hosts Bethel next Saturday, April 4. The doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Saint John's Field in Collegeville.
