CHANDLER, Ariz. – Saint John's split a doubleheader against Concordia-Chicago on Mon., March 2, in Chandler, Ariz.

Concordia scored 10 runs in the final two innings, including six in the bottom of the seventh, to defeat the Johnnies 11-10 in game one. SJU, sparked by a bases-clearing triple from junior Andrew Gurbada (Royalton, Minn.) posted a seven-run fourth inning to take an 8-1 lead until the Cougars responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

SJU increased its lead to 10-5 entering the bottom half of the seventh thanks to a two-run homer from sophomore Aaron Traut (St. Cloud, Minn./Rocori), the first of his collegiate career.

Sophomore Brett Kramer (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) allowed one run on just four hits thru five innings of work.

In game two, the Johnnies' five-run second inning proved to be the difference as SJU earned its first victory of the young season, 5-3. RBI singles from Gurbada, Kramer (his first career hit) and freshman Andrew Rotschafer (Eden Prairie, Minn.) gave the Johnnies a 3-0 lead before sophomore Brian Skluzacek (Cold Spring, Minn.) blasted a two-run homer down the right-field line.

Junior Aaron Hellem (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) earned the victory by allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits thru 6 1/3 innings in his first career start. Junior Andrew Aebly (Madison, Wis./Edgewood) retired the final two batters with runners on second and third to earn his first career save.
