Johnnies Earn Overtime Win, Keep MIAC Playoff Hopes Alive

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Sophomore defenseman Jared Smith's (Grand Rapids, Minn.) power-play goal, his first of the season, with 25 seconds remaining in overtime gave Saint John's a 3-2 win over Concordia-Moorhead Saturday, Feb. 7 in Moorhead.

Sophomore forward Mike Wallgren (Oakdale, Minn.) gave SJU a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal of his own at the 14:59 mark of the opening period. Senior forward Jason Johannes (Eagan, Minn.) and sophomore defenseman Brent Brodersen (Shakopee, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play for SJU (8-12-1, 5-6-1 MIAC).

Following a scoreless second period, sophomore defenseman Pat McClure (Maple Plain, Minn.) increased the Johnnies' lead to 2-0 off of feed from junior forward Karl Gilbert (Hermantown, Minn.) 2:10 into the period.

Concordia tied the game at 2-2 with goals from Nick Thielen and Erick Galt late in regulation. With goaltender Mike Persson pulled, Galt tied the game with just 16 seconds left to send it into overtime.

Senior goaltender Vince Wheeler (Clearwater, Minn.) made 36 saves to improve his record to 8-7-1 on the season.

The Johnnies were 2-for-4 on the power play, while Concordia (3-18-2, 1-11-2 MIAC) was just 1-for-9 with the man advantage and 1-for-15 in the weekend series. The Johnnies have now won 19 of the last 21 meetings.

SJU travels to face Hamline next Friday, Feb. 13. The puck is set to drop at 7 p.m. at Drake Arena in St. Paul.
