SJU Tennis Defeats St. Thomas, 5-4

SARTELL, Minn. – Saint John's improved its MIAC record to 2-0 with a 5-4 win over St. Thomas on Saturday, Feb. 21, at Gold's Gym in Sartell.

Both teams split the six singles matches as senior Mark Steelman (St. Paul, Minn./Holy Angels) posted a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1, while junior Luke Odegaard (Forest Lake, Minn.) and freshman Chris Voigt (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) recorded wins at No. 4 (6-3, 6-3) and No. 6 (7-5, 6-4), respectively.

The No. 2 doubles tandem of senior Kevin Goihl (Litchfield, Minn.) and junior Dutch Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) earned an 8-2 win before senior Eric Inglis (Hutchinson, Minn.) and freshman Ian Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) sealed the win for SJU with a nail-biting 9-8 win at No. 3 doubles, which included a 13-11 tie-breaker. 

The Johnnies (2-1, 2-0 MIAC) host St. Scholastica for a 12 p.m. match Sunday, Feb. 22, at Gold's Gym in Sartell.
