Johnnies Extend Winning Streak to Four with 3-2 Victory at Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Saint John's extended its winning streak to four with a 3-2 win over Hamline Friday, Feb. 13 in St. Paul.
 
The Johnnies (9-12-1, 6-6-1 MIAC) took a 1-0 lead 8:06 into the game with a goal from freshman forward Grant Ellena (Coon Rapids, Minn.). Sophomore forward Mike Wallgren (Oakdale, Minn.) and freshman defenseman Jeff Lesmeister (Anoka, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play for SJU.
 
The Pipers tied the game at the 10:10 mark of the second with a goal from Dustin Fulton.
 
The Johnnies regained the lead six minutes later on a power-play goal from sophomore defenseman Brent Brodersen (Shakopee, Minn.) with assists going to senior defenseman Clayton Rehm (Park Rapids, Minn.) and senior forward Jake Hipp (Bismarck, N.D.).
 
Senior forward Jason Johannes (Eagan, Minn.) increased SJU's lead to 3-1 lead five minutes into the third period. Brodersen and junior forward Chris Murray (Chanhassen, Minn.) were credited with the assists.
 
The Pipers' Andrew Birkholz made it a one-goal game with less than five minutes remaining in regulation.

Senior goaltender Vince Wheeler (Clearwater, Minn.) made 31 saves to improve his record to 9-7-1 on the season.

The Johnnies were just 1-for-8 on the power play, but managed to kill of all three of Hamline's (12-9-1, 7-6-0 MIAC) three power-play opportunities. The Pipers have now lost six of their last eight games.

SJU, which has now won six of its last seven games, hosts Hamline for a 2 p.m. contest Saturday, Feb. 14 at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
