IRONWOOD, Mich. – The Saint John's University Nordic ski team started its 2009 season with a pair of strong performances against Northland College (Wis.) Jan. 5-6 in Ironwood, Mich.
Freshman Grant Cook (Duluth, Minn./East) won the 8k Classic race with a time of 24:30 on Monday, Jan. 5. Cook was followed by senior David Gifford (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) and sophomore Jared Sundstrom (Proctor, Minn.) in second (25:53) and third place (27:00), respectively.
Cook, Gifford and Sundstrom followed in the same order in Tuesday's 10k Skate race. Cook won his second race in as many days in a time of 27:27 to earn six team points. Gifford finished with a time of 30:09 (five points), followed by Sundstrom in 30:37 (four points). SJU defeated Northland with a scored of 15-6.
The Johnnies return to action by hosting the annual Minnesota College Series on Sunday, Jan. 18 in Collegeville.
