SJU Hockey, Schueller Earns Season's First Win

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Saint John's earned its first win of the season, and first victory for first-year head coach Doug Schueller, with a 3-1 win over Lake Forest on Friday, Nov. 7 in Lake Forest, Ill.

Senior forward Pat Connelly (Birchwood, Minn.) gave SJU an early 1-0 lead, just 52 seconds into the contest, with his second goal of the season. Sophomore forward Mike Wallgren (Oakdale, Minn.) assisted on the play for the Johnnies.

Lake Forest (1-4, 0-0 NCHA) tied the game 27 seconds into the second period on a goal by Zach Kozak.

Wallgren gave SJU the lead for good with a power-play goal at the 15:19 mark of the second period, with assists going to sophomore defensemen Brent Brodersen (Shakopee, Minn.) and Jared Smith (Grand Rapids, Minn.).

Brodersen padded the Johnnies' lead with an empty-net goal, his third tally of the season, with 35 seconds left in the game.

Senior goaltender Vince Wheeler (Clearwater, Minn.) made 24 saves to earn his first victory of the season and 21st of his career as a Johnnie.

SJU outshot the Foresters 45-25 in the game.

SJU (1-2, 0-0 MIAC) travels to face the defending NCAA Division III national champions, No. 1 St. Norbert, Saturday, Nov. 8. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:05 p.m. at the Cornerstone Community Center in De Pere, Wis.
