ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Wis.-Stevens Point scored four goals in the second period and its fifth of the game with 3:08 remaining in the contest to defeat Saint John's 5-4 on Saturday, Nov. 1 in St. Cloud.
Senior forward Brian Baker (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) tallied his first goal of the season to give the Johnnies a 1-0 with 6:02 left in the first period. Senior forward Pat Connelly (Birchwood, Minn.) and senior defenseman Lance Wheeler (Clearwater, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play for SJU.
SJU then took a 2-0 lead early in the second period thanks to a power-play goal by sophomore defenseman Brent Brodersen (Shakopee, Minn.) with assists going to sophomore forward Mike Wallgren (Oakdale, Minn.) and fellow sophomore defenseman Jared Smith (Grand Rapids, Minn.).
Wis.-Stevens Point answered with three consecutive goals in a span of 5:02 to take a 3-2 lead.
Wallgren tied the game with a power-play goal at the 15:52 mark of the second period with assists going to Baker and Smith.
The game did not stay at a deadlock for long, however, as the Pointers' Nic Polaski gave UWSP a 4-3 lead with a goal 39 seconds later.
Brodersen tied the game at 4-4 with his second power-play goal of the afternoon with just under 12 minutes to play. Baker and Smith again assisted on the scoring play for SJU (0-2, 0-0 MIAC).
UWSP's Matt Stendahl then tallied the game-winner with 3:08 left in the game. The Johnnies had a six-on-four advantage thanks to a power-play opportunity and an extra skater in the final 33 seconds, but was not able to tie the game.
Freshman goaltender Steele DeFazio (Toronto, Ontario) made 21 saves in his first collegiate start. The Pointers' Thomas Speer made 28 saves to improve his record to 3-0 on the young season.
SJU outshot the Pointers 32-26 in the game and was 3-for-12 on the power play.
Ten of the Johnnies' last 14 losses have been by one goal, including both games this season.
The Johnnies return to action next Friday, Nov. 7 when they travel to face Lake Forest, Ill. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. in Lake Forest, Ill.
