Saint John’s University senior Aaron Burtzel (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) became the 32nd Johnnie to reach 1,000 career points as SJU snapped its five-game losing streak with an 84-68 win over Saint Mary’s on Monday, Jan. 17, in Collegeville. He led all scorers with 26 points on 12 of 13 shooting, and added eight rebounds, four blocks and two assists. He is currently in the top four of the MIAC (conference games only) in six different categories: shooting percentage (first, .643), minutes played (second, 35.00 mpg.), steals (second, 2.00 spg.), rebounding (third, 9.4 rpg.), assists (fourth, 3.89 apg.) and scoring (tied-fourth, 16.6 ppg.). 

Burtzel needs 10 assists to reach 368 for his career and pass assistant coach Matt Ohme (2003-07) for the school’s all-time record.

The Johnnies travel to face St. Thomas this Saturday, Jan. 22. The game is scheduled for 3 p.m. in St. Paul.
