Saint John’s University senior first baseman and leadoff hitter Kyle Henkemeyer (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) went 4-for-8, including 3-for-3 with runners in scoring position, in the Johnnies’ extra-inning sweep of Gustavus Adolphus last Saturday. The pair of wins clinched the third MIAC Tournament appearance for SJU (21-16, 14-6 MIAC), which finished second in the final conference standings.
Henkemeyer launched his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot, in the Johnnies’ 7-6 game-one victory in eight innings. He ended the contest 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. He followed that performance with another 2-for-4 game with an RBI and a double in game two.
He currently leads the Johnnies in at-bats (137), runs (39), hits (52), t-triples (5), RBI (27) and slugging percentage (.547).
SJU begins the MIAC Tournament this Friday, May 14, against Concordia-Moorhead. The nine-inning game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Sechler Park in Northfield. The winner/loser will played the winner/loser between Augsburg and St. Thomas at 7 p.m. (winning teams play in Dundas, losing teams stay in Northfield). The tournament is double-elimination and continues through Sunday, if necessary.
