Although he did not score either goal in the Johnnies' thrilling 2-1 overtime win over Carleton Sept. 14, Saint John's University junior Michael Coborn (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) was instrumental in creating the scoring opportunities. He blasted a free kick at the keeper's head and the deflection went directly to the foot of sophomore David Wee (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) for SJU's first goal of the match. Then, four minutes into overtime, he turned the corner and slid a pass into the middle of the goal box where a hard-charging Zane Heinselman (River Falls, Wis.) put it away for the victory. He was named the MIAC Men's Soccer Athlete of the Week for his performance.

The match, which served as the conference opener for both teams, was the first under the lights in SJU history.

The win snapped a five-match losing streak to Carleton, of which three losses occurred in overtime. The Knights have won or tied for the MIAC regular-season conference championship four of the last five seasons. Carleton entered the match ranked sixth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) North Region rankings and is now ranked third in the region, as well as No. 23 nationally, in the new rankings released Sept. 18.

Coborn currently leads the MIAC in assists (5) and is second on the team in points (7). He boasts 54 points (17g/20a) in 40 career matches for the Johnnies.

SJU (3-2-2, 1-0-0 MIAC) returns to conference play at Gustavus Adolphus next Saturday, Sept. 22. The match is set for 1 p.m. in St. Peter.
