Smith-Coppes graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of San Diego in 1992 and received his MBA from Bethel University in March 2010.  John was recruited to join the coaching staff by former Johnnie head coach Pat Haws, and has been the goalkeeper coach at Saint John's since 1994.

John played and coached on the West Coast before relocating to the Midwest, and currently coaches boys (2008 Minnesota State-champions) and girls teams for MYSA youth travel soccer in addition to fulfilling his responsibilities with the Johnnies.  Additionally, John sits on the board of the Central Minnesota Youth Soccer Association (CMYSA), committed to the formation and development of youth soccer in the area.

John is the Director of Community and Career Development at Rasmussen College in St. Cloud.  He resides in Sartell, Minnesota with his wife Bridget, son Tyler, and daughter Emma.
