Hommerding is in his seventh season with the Johnnies in 2021-22. He returned to the Johnnies' bench in 2017-18 after assisting for two seasons from 2011-13. A hockey coach since 1992, Hommerding coached St. Cloud Tech High School to two conference titles from 1998-2009 and recently served as an assistant coach for the Great Plains Upper Midwest High School Elite League team from 2009-11. The team won its league playoffs in 2010. He coached youth hockey from 1992-97 and served as an assistant at Tech during the 1997-98 season before taking over as head coach the following year. Hommerding was an assistant coach at Sartell-St. Stephen High School in 2010-11.
