Bio (Cross Country)
• Miles graduated from Saint John's in 1976 and received his master's degree in forestry from the University of Minnesota in 1979.
• The 2022 cross country season was his 44th as the Johnnies' head coach. He announced his retirement in August 2023. 
2022 Season
• The Johnnies finished second out of 11 teams at the MIAC Championship and seventh out of 28 teams at the NCAA Regional this fall.
• Four Johnnies – Lloyd Young ’24 (fourth), Dillon Diekmann ’22 (11th), Carter Grove ’24 (13th) and Tommy Allen ’24 (14th) – earned All-MIAC honors (top 15 out of 169 runners) at the MIAC Championships. Young finished 10th to collect his second-consecutive All-Region distinction (top 35) two weeks later at the NCAA North Regional.
• Young earned All-America honors, the 25th for an athlete in program history and the Johnnies' first since Chris Erichsen '08 in 2007 (third place), by placing 40th out of 294 runners at the NCAA Division III Championships in East Lansing, Mich.
2021 Season
• SJU placed third out of 10 teams at the MIAC Championship and ninth out of 31 teams at the NCAA North Regional.
• Lloyd Young '23 and Andy Goldsmith '22 earned All-MIAC honors (top 15) by finishing third and eighth, respectively, in the 195-man field at the MIAC Championships, and were All-Region (top 35) in fifth and 26th two weeks later at the NCAA North Regional. Young placed 52nd out of 293 runners Nov. 20 at the NCAA Division III Championships in Louisville, Ky.
2019 Season
• SJU finished sixth out of 11 teams at the MIAC Championship and ninth out of 28 teams at the NCAA Central Regional.
• The 2019 cross country team earned U.S. Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic honors.
2018 Season
• The Johnnies finished fifth out of 11 teams at the 2018 MIAC Cross Country Championship and 10th out of 31 teams at the NCAA Central Regional.
Accomplishments
• Miles' Cross Country program has finished among the MIAC's top two squads in 25 of the past 43 seasons, including nine MIAC titles (1981, 1982, 1983, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2006 and 2007). He has had 22 cross country teams qualify for the national meet, with 17 recording top-15 finishes.

Bio (Track and Field)
• Miles led the track and field team for 36 seasons (1980-2015) and still assistants the program as the assistant track and field head coach.

Accomplishments
• As a former head coach, he produced a winning track and field program that finished among the MIAC's top two squads in 23 of his 36 seasons from 1980-2015, including MIAC championships in 1997, 1999, 2005, 2007 and 2011. Miles won MIAC Coach of the Year honors in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2011. At the national level, Miles' athletes put together 61 Division III All-America performances.
• Saint John's University dedicated the track within Clemens Stadium in honor of him.
Past Experience
• Miles was an All-MIAC performer in cross country. He was the MIAC six-mile run champion and steeplechase runner-up at Saint John’s as a senior in 1976.
• Miles returned to Saint John's in 1979 as head coach of the cross country and track and field programs.
Personal
• Miles’ brothers Bill and Pat also ran cross-country at Cretin-Derham Hall High School. During his junior and senior year, Miles’ older brother, Bill, became his coach. Bill continued to coach at Cretin for six years before moving to Wayzata high school, where he coached and taught for 39 more, winning nine state championships along the way. Miles’ brother, Pat, also followed the family tradition and coached at Great River Charter School in St. Paul for two seasons.
