Jerry Haugen

The 2003 NCAA Division III Defensive Coordinator of the Year (American Football Monthly), Haugen is in his 47th season as an assistant football coach at Saint John’s in 2022. The Johnnies have posted a 403-95-5 (.806) overall record and a 305-59-4 (.834) MIAC record in the 46 seasons with Haugen as a defensive coach. SJU has allowed 14.4 points per game (503 games) and recorded 70 shutouts (13.9 percent) during his tenure. Since 1978, his defense has finished in the top two of the MIAC in total defense 24 times, including 14 of the past 19 seasons, and in scoring defense 29 times, including 21 of the past 25 seasons. A 1976 graduate of Saint John’s, Haugen was a four-year starter and gained All-MIAC honors as a defensive back in 1975. He ranks second on the school’s career interception list with 15 (first place without postseason games). Haugen also serves as SJU’s head baseball coach, where he boasts an 912-688-5 (.570) career record, which places him in the top 15 on the NCAA Division III winningest active coaches win list. The 2023 season will be the 46th for Haugen, who has led SJU to four MIAC playoff titles, three regular-season championships and 12 consecutive appearances in the MIAC Tournament (14 overall). In addition to baseball and football, Haugen has worked as an assistant basketball coach and head hockey coach at SJU. He has four children and nine grandchildren, and lives with his wife, Cindy, in St. Cloud.
