The 2003 NCAA Division III Defensive Coordinator of the Year (American Football Monthly), Haugen is in his 44th season as an assistant football coach at Saint John’s in 2019. The Johnnies have posted a 380-92-5 (.802) overall record and a 290-58-4 (.830) MIAC record in the 43 seasons with Haugen as a defensive coach. SJU has allowed 14.3 points per game (477 games) and recorded 64 shutouts (13.4 percent) during his tenure. Since 1978, his defense has finished in the top two of the MIAC in total defense 22 times, including 12 of the past 17 seasons, and in scoring defense 27 times, including 19 of the past 23 seasons. A 1976 graduate of Saint John’s, Haugen was a four-year starter and gained All-MIAC honors as a defensive back in 1975. He ranks second on the school’s career interception list with 15 (first place without postseason games). Haugen also serves as SJU’s head baseball coach, where he boasts an 852-658-5 (.564) career record, which places him in the top 15 on the NCAA Division III winningest active coaches win list. The 2020 season will the 43rd for Haugen, who led SJU to a 32-14 record (13-7 MIAC), its 10th consecutive appearance in the MIAC Tournament and the program’s fourth playoff title in the last eight seasons. The Johnnies have won two other regular-season conference titles during his 42-year tenure as head coach. In addition to baseball and football, Haugen has worked as an assistant basketball coach and head hockey coach at SJU.
