The 2003 NCAA Division III Defensive Coordinator of the Year (American Football Monthly), Haugen is in his 43rd season as an assistant football coach at Saint John’s in 2018. The Johnnies have posted a 368-91-5 (.798) overall record and a 282-58-4 (.826) MIAC record in the 42 seasons with Haugen as a defensive coach. SJU has allowed 14.4 points per game (464 games) and recorded 60 shutouts (12.9%) during his tenure. Since 1978, his defense has finished in the top two of the MIAC in total defense 21 times, including 11 of the past 16 seasons, and in scoring defense 26 times, including 18 of the past 22 seasons. A 1976 graduate of Saint John’s, Haugen was a four-year starter and gained All-MIAC honors as a defensive back in 1975. He ranks second on the school’s career interception list with 15 (first place without postseason games). Haugen also serves as SJU’s head baseball coach, where he boasts a 820-644-5 (.560) career record, which places him in the top 15 on the NCAA Division III winningest active coaches win list. The 2019 season will the 42nd for Haugen, who led SJU to a 33-8 record and the MIAC regular-season title in 2018. The Johnnies have made 10 MIAC Tournament appearances with two other regular-season conference titles and three MIAC Playoff championships during his 41-year tenure as head coach. In addition to baseball and football, Haugen has worked as an assistant basketball coach and head hockey coach at SJU.
