The 2003 NCAA Division III Defensive Coordinator of the Year (American Football Monthly), Haugen is in his 42nd season as an assistant football coach at Saint John’s in 2017. The Johnnies have posted a 359-89-5 (.798) overall record and a 275-57-4 (.824) MIAC record in the 41 seasons with Haugen as a defensive coach. SJU has allowed 14.5 points per game (453 games) and recorded 58 shutouts (12.8%) during his tenure. Since 1978, his defense has finished in the top two of the MIAC in total defense 20 times, including 10 of the past 15 seasons, and in scoring defense 25 times, including 17 of the past 21 seasons. A 1976 graduate of Saint John’s, Haugen was a four-year starter and gained All-MIAC honors as a defensive back in 1975. He ranks second on the school’s career interception list with 15 (first place without postseason games). Haugen also serves as SJU’s head baseball coach, where he boasts a 787-636-5 (.553) career record, which places him in the top 25 on the NCAA Division III winningest active coaches win list. The 2018 season is his 41st at the helm. The Johnnies have made nine MIAC Tournament appearances with two regular-season conference titles and three MIAC Playoff championships, including 2015 and 2016, during his 40-year tenure as head coach. In addition to baseball and football, Haugen has worked as an assistant basketball coach and head hockey coach at SJU.
