Jerry Haugen

The 2003 NCAA Division III Defensive Coordinator of the Year (American Football Monthly), Haugen is in his 40th season as an assistant football coach at Saint John’s in 2015. The Johnnies have posted a 339-85-5 (.796) overall record and a 268-56-4 (.823) MIAC record in the 39 seasons with Haugen as a defensive coach. SJU has allowed 14.5 points per game (429 games) and recorded 53 shutouts (12.4%) during his tenure. Since 1978, his defense has finished in the top two of the MIAC in total defense 18 times, including eight of the past 13 seasons, and in scoring defense 23 times, including 15 of the past 19 seasons. A 1976 graduate of Saint John’s, Haugen was a four-year starter and gained All-MIAC honors as a defensive back in 1975. He ranks second on the school’s career interception list with 15. Haugen also serves as SJU’s head baseball coach, where he boasts a 730-609-5 (.545) career record, which places him in the top 25 on the NCAA Division III winningest active coaches win list. The Johnnies have made seven MIAC Tournament appearances with two regular-season conference titles and a pair of MIAC Playoff championships, including 2015, during his tenure.
