SJU Football Clear Bag Policy

All attendees are subject to the clear bag policy at all football games starting in the fall of 2026. This policy limits the type and size of bags that may be carried into the venue. It is modeled on the standard adopted across NCAA and professional venues nationwide, which balances spectator convenience against the need for rapid, reliable security screening.

Permitted Bags
  • Clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC bags not exceeding 12" x 6" x 12";

  • One-gallon clear resealable plastic storage bags (e.g., Ziploc);

  • Small clutch bags no larger than 4.5" x 6.5", with or without a handle or strap — these need not be clear; and

  • Medically necessary bags and diaper bags, subject to inspection (see Section 4).

Prohibited Bags
  • Backpacks of any kind (including clear backpacks larger than the permitted dimensions);

  • Purses larger than the permitted clutch size;

  • Printed pattern plastic bags, tinted or textured bags;

  • Coolers, duffel bags, fanny packs, mesh or straw bags, reusable grocery totes, large totes;

  • Camera bags, binocular cases, and computer bags; and

  • Any bag that does not meet the permitted specifications above.

What Fans May Still Carry

The clear bag policy limits the type of bag — not the items brought in. Attendees may carry keys, phones, wallets, credit cards, cash, and similar personal items in their pockets or in a permitted bag. The policy is designed to make screening fast and reliable, not to restrict ordinary personal belongings.

Promotional Clear Bags
To ease the transition and avoid turning fans away, Life Safety coordinated with Athletics and the campus Spirit Shop to make approved clear bags available — sold at the SJU Spirit Shop and, where budget or sponsorship allows, distributed free at early Tier 1 events. This is a standard and low-cost element of a successful rollout.

Exceptions and Accessibility

The clear bag policy accommodates medical, accessibility and family needs. These exceptions are standard across venues nationwide and are non-negotiable elements of a fair and lawful policy.

Category

Accommodation

Disposition

Medical necessity

Bags containing medical devices, supplies, or equipment — including breast pumps and related supplies — are permitted regardless of size or type. They are subject to inspection at a designated gate but are never denied entry.

Inspected, always admitted

Diaper needs

Diaper supplies may be carried in a clear bag. Each member of a family, including children, may carry an approved clear bag.

Clear bag, standard screening

Breast milk / medications

Breast milk and required medications are permitted in clear bags or clear containers.

Permitted, screened

Accessibility needs

Attendees with disabilities requiring bags or equipment that fall outside the policy are accommodated. Life Safety designates a gate for accessibility screening.

Inspected, always admitted

Credentialed personnel

Media, working staff, and vendors with proper credentials may carry bags that do not meet the policy, subject to screening at a designated entrance.

Screened, admitted with credential

No person with a legitimate medical, accessibility, or family need is denied entry because of a bag. When in doubt, gate staff direct the attendee to the designated inspection gate rather than turning them away.
