Chapman University
• Due to COVID restrictions in California, Chapman played only 17 games this season. They went 13-4 to win the SCIAC. Only four teams from the SCIAC were able to play this season: Chapman, Cal Lutheran, Redlands, and La Verne.
• Chapman makes its third consecutive trip into the NCAA Division III Championship (minus the cancellation of 2020) and enters as the defending national champions after winning the title in 2019. It is the 31st appearance in program history, including its appearances in the Division II tournament prior to 1995.
• Despite playing an abbreviated schedule, the Chapman offense has put up some big numbers. The Panthers are hitting .323 as a team and averaging nearly eight runs per game.
• Junior CF Brad Shimabuku leads the Panthers with a .386 average at the top of the order. Junior C Cooper Foard’s 22 RBIs are tops on the team. Senior 3B Hank Zeisler – the Most Outstanding Player of the 2019 World Series – has five home runs in the shortened season and has 10 homers in his last 32 games, including the shortened 2020 season.
• The Chapman pitching staff has found a groove over the last two weeks – led by the emergence of sophomore starter Grant Manning. Manning pitched a 10-strikeout complete game to clinch the SCIAC Tournament championship and struck out nine batters in his previous start. He has dropped his ERA to a team-best 3.24.
• Senior Riley Glenn has pitched the most innings this season, tossing 35 over five starts and two relief appearance. He has a 3.86 ERA with a 4-0 record. He is 9-1 in his career with a 3.60 ERA.
• Sophomore Wyatt Thompson has settled into a closer role over the last few weeks. He has allowed just one run on three hits over his last three appearances (7.1 innings) while striking out 10 and walking two.
• The Panthers come into the tournament on a hot streak, winning their last six games in a row.
Pacific University
• The Boxers hit 43 home runs in 44 games and batted .303 this season.
• Offensively, Chase Anderson is batting .430, which led the NWC. He was named the NWC Player of the Year and will continue his playing career next year at Divsion I Utah.
• On the mound, Will Clark recorded 7 wins in 12 appearances and 11 starts. He was named the NWC Pitcher of the Year Davis Koester led the team with 4 saves on the season.
University of Scranton
• First Landmark conference title and first NCAA Tournament appearance with 6-3 win over Elizabethtown in winner-take-all, game three of Landmark Title Series.
• Won final two games of title series (4-0 and 6-3) after dropping game one by a score of 13-7.
• Two walk-off wins on first weekend of Landmark Conference Playoffs (Moravian, W 4-3) and Susquehanna (W, 11-10) to advance to championship series.
• Sophomore right-hander Daniel Johnson was named Landmark Conference Pitcher of the Year and posted second-lowest, single-season ERA in program history (0.68). Johnson ranked second in Landmark in ERA (0.68), tied for third in wins (5) and ranked fourth in strikeouts (38).
• Head coach Mike Bartoletti was named Landmark Coach of the Year and earned 300th win earlier this season with a victory at Juniata on May 2.
• Other All-Conference Selections: SS Tyler Kirsten (1st team), OF Connor Harding (1st team), OF Kevin Johnson (2nd Team), RHP Josh Lydon (2nd team). Kirsten tied for Landmark Conference batting title (.406); Harding tied for second in stolen bases (15) and tied for fifth in RBI (21).
• Harding is program’s all-time leader in triples (12), ranks tied for second in stolen bases (47), fifth in batting average (.396) and hits (169), and seventh in runs scored (105).
University of St. Thomas
• St. Thomas won the MIAC regular-season title on percentage points at 17-2, just ahead of 18-3 Gustavus Adolphus.
• The Tommies have won 15 of their last 17 games, and 26 of their last 30.
• They finished a combined 10-3 on the season against 31-win Northwestern-St. Paul (UMAC champion) and 29-win Saint Mary's (MIAC playoff champion)
• They went 2-1 vs. MIAC runner-up and No. 3-ranked region team Gustavus; 2-1 against 24-win Bethel; and 2-0 against 20-win St. Scholastica.
• Six of their seven losses came by three runs or less.
• They rank at or near the top of Division III in ERA (1.95), runs allowed (77 in 36 games) and fielding percentage (.978).
• The Toms have advanced to the NCAA playoffs for the 21st time in the last 26 seasons (not counting 2020's canceled season), but will compete in a regional tourney in the state of Minnesota for the first time.
• The Toms have already played six games this season at SJU's Becker Park.
• Redshirt-freshman second baseman Sam Kulesa has been involved in 18 double plays and has no errors in 134 defensive chances, and as the leadoff man is batting .414 with 48 hits in 33 games.
• Senior Graham Laubscher was voted the MIAC's Pitcher of the Year. In 32 career appearances he's surpassed 200 strikeouts. He's 7-0 with a 1.51 ERA in April and May with 74 strikeouts and 14 walks in 53 innings.
• St. Thomas is closing out its Division III era this spring and will compete in all 20 sports in Division I, most in the Summit League, starting in fall 2021.
University of Texas at Dallas
• 3rd all-time appearance in the NCAA Championship (4-4 all-time record).
• ASC Tournament Champion, winning second league title in four years. UTD also won the ASC title in 2018 and earned at-large berth into NCAA Championship in 2007.
• The Comets enter this week’s regional on a 10-game winning streak, two wins shy of the program record (12) set in 2009.
• UTD leads the ASC in batting average (.327), hits (438) , walks (197), team ERA (4.31), wins (29) and saves (8).
• Comet head coach Shane Shewmake is in his 20th season at UTD after starting the program in 2002. He holds a 527-313 all-time record at UTD, collecting his 500th career victory earlier this season (10-4 at Howard Payne, Feb. 27).
• Junior right-hander Carter Cochrane is 10-0 on the spring, earning the win in each of his 10 starts this season for the Comets. Cochrane earned just six total victories over his first two seasons combined with the program. He boasts a 2.45 career ERA with a 16-2 overall record from 2019-21. He was named first team All-ASC this spring.
• Senior centerfield Jacob Perry currently leads the Comets with a .397 batting average entering this week’s regional. Also a first-team All-ASC honoree for the Comets, Perry is 20-for-23 in stolen bases and boasts a .510 on-base percentage. He is second on the team with 14 doubles from the lead-off spot. Perry enters the tournament on an 18-game hitting streak and has recorded at least one hit in 36 of 39 games played this spring.
• Junior leftfielder A.J. Liu is second on the squad with a .380 batting while leading the Comets in hits (62), run scored (52), doubles (18) and extra-base hits (24). The Comets’ final first team All-ASC performer ranks second on the squad with 40 RBI.
• Junior second baseman Ramon Garza was named the MVP of the ASC’s Gold Bracket as the Comets clinched their second-ever conference title earlier this month. Garza, a second team All-ASC selection, leads the Comets with 49 RBI and ranks second on the squad with eight home runs. Garza matched the UTD single-season record with three grand slams this spring.
York College
• The Spartans won their first MAC Commonwealth Conference title in their first year in the league after spending the previous 29 years in the Capital Athletic Conference.
• The Spartans are third in all of Division III with 54 home runs in 36 games, and are also third in home runs per game (1.50).
• Senior Jack Barry leads Division III in total home runs with 19. Teammate Austin Denlinger is tied for second in the nation with 18.
• The NCAA Tournament appearance is the 13th in Spartan baseball history.
