Jason Spohn
Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator
Spohn is in his 25th year of coaching at SJU in the 2026-27 academic year. He is a 1997 graduate of St. Cloud State University. Prior to attending SCSU, Spohn played baseball at Ridgewater and Itasca community colleges. Spohn coached at Rocori High School and for the Cold Spring Legion baseball team for three seasons. 

Josh Bungum
Assistant Coach
Bungum is in his 11th season as an assistant baseball coach for the Johnnies in 2026-27. A native of Paynesville, Bungum was a decorated, four-year starter for the Johnnies on the football field and played baseball two years. On the gridiron, Bungum was named D3football.com All-American honorable mention in 2015 as a returner, where he was a two-time All-MIAC first-team selection. A three-time All-MIAC second-team selection as a receiver, Bungum ended his career second in school history in receptions (213) and fourth in receiving yards (2,676). He was the first Johnnie to lead the team in both catches and receiving yards all four seasons since Dave Arnold '73 (1969-72). Following graduation, Bungum signed and played for the Cineplexx Blue Devils, a professional team in the Austrian Football League (AFL) and the Central European Football League (CEFL). He graduated from SJU in 2016 and is also an assistant football coach for the Johnnies. Bungum and his wife, Alicia, reside in St. Joseph.

Brian Hansen
Assistant Coach
Hansen is in his fifth season as the Johnnie baseball hitting coach in the 2026-27 academic year. Hansen graduated in 2013 from St. Cloud State where he played alongside Head Coach Scott Lieser and was a three-year starter in centerfield. He was drafted in the 49th round of the 2011 MLB draft by Cleveland. He played professionally in 2014 and 2015 for the independent River City (Missouri) Rascals of the Frontier League. River City folded after the 2019 season. The Cold Spring native and Rocori graduate still plays in the outfield for the Cold Spring Stingers. He and his wife Emma have two sons, Leo and Nash.

Scott Becker
Volunteer Assistant Coach
A 1977 graduate of SJU, Becker is in his 11th season as an assistant baseball coach for the Johnnies in 2026-27. The former football and baseball standout – who played on John Gagliardi's 1976 Division III national championship team – is a current member of the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University Common Boards of Trustees, as well as the SJU Leadership Council. He also teaches a private equity course on campus with fellow instructor Cary Musech '80. He was an alumni association board member from 1992-96 and a SJU Private Investment Board member from 2000 to 2012. In addition, he served as an SJU Capital Campaign volunteer from 2015 to 2018. He is an assistant baseball coach for Tri-City Red, an American Legion baseball team based out of New Brighton (Post #513). Off the diamond, Becker is a founder of Northstar Capital, a leading private equity firm based in Minneapolis. He was named the 2023 Fr. Walter Reger Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient – the highest honor bestowed by the SJU Alumni Association for service to alma mater.

Thom Woodward
Volunteer Assistant Coach
Woodward is in his 22nd season as an assistant baseball coach at SJU in the 2026-27 academic year. He previously served as the Johnnies' junior-varsity coach and recruiting coordinator. A 1970 graduate of Saint John's, Woodward received the J-Club's Distinguished Service Award in 2024. He returned to his alma mater as the school's news service director, overseeing SJU sports information, in 1973. Woodward moved on to a position in institutional advancement in 1980 and helped create the Gagliardi Trophy in 1993. Woodward also designed the SJU No. 1 logo used for more than 20 years on printed programs, playing fields and uniforms.
