Day 1 Results
NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Saint John's sophomore
Bailey Evans (Breckenridge, Minn.) leads the pool of 17 competitors with 3,693 points following the first five events of the 2026 MIAC Decathlon held Thursday, April 30, at Carleton.Â
The decathlon's final five events – 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 meters – begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday.Â
Evans, who earned All-MIAC (top three) honors with a second-place finish in the heptathlon in February, is 380 points ahead of Gustavus Adolphus' Connor McCormick in second and the 2026 MIAC heptathlon Soren Kaster in third.Â
Evans started the day with a win in the 100-meter dash, crossing the line in 10.77, one-hundredth of a second away from his personal best. He was the only competitor to run sub-11 seconds. Â
He recorded a personal record in his next event, leaping 6.63 meters in the long jump for first and 727 points to his total. The next closest jump was 6.45 meters. He had the widest margin for first in the shot put, tossing 13.44 meters to Bethel's Aaron Elseth's 11.82 meters in second. Â
Evans was the only athlete to cross the 1.86-meter threshold in the high jump and ran the seventh-fastest 400-meter dash time (53.01).Â
Freshman
Josh Pretasky's (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) highest mark was a fourth-place throw in the shot put (10.61 meters). He is in 12th through day one of competition.Â
Freshman
Charles VanGrinsven (Prior Lake, Minn.) finished 14th in each of his events with a PR in the 100-meter dash (11.88).Â
Junior
Cole Stencel (Mapleton, Minn./Maple River) races in the 1,500 meters at Hamline's Meet of the Unsaintly, which begins at 5 p.m. Friday, May 1, at Klas Field in St. Paul. The rest of the team competes at St. Olaf's Ole Open at noon Saturday, May 2, in Northfield.Â
