ST. PAUL, Minn. – Saint John's track & field won two events and recorded 22 top-10 finishes at Division I St. Thomas' Joe Sweeney Invitational on Wednesday, April 29.
SJU earned both of its wins in the field, as senior
Kole Guth (St. Peter, Minn.) topped the leaderboard in the pole vault (4.21 meters) and classmate
Mitchell Degen (Brainerd, Minn.) claimed the javelin crown with a heave of 58.07 meters.
Three Johnnies finished in the 800 meters' top 10, led by senior
Nick St. Peter's (Maple Grove, Minn.) season-best 1:53.54 for fifth. Junior
Max McCoy (Bennington, Neb./Mount Michael Benedictine), who bested St. Peter in the Johnnies' home meet two weeks ago, took eighth with a personal-best 1:54.81. Senior
Owen Montreuil (Jordan, Minn.) finished just behind him in ninth (1:54.95).
Sophomore
Grady Minnerath (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) led SJU in the discus and the shot put, posting the best Division III throws in both events. He finished fourth in the discus with a 44.09-meter toss on his fifth attempt and took sixth in the shot put with a launch of 14.82 meters on his second throw.
Three more Johnnies were top 10 in the 100-meter dash, led by junior
Kieran Murnan (Lakeville, Minn./Holy Angels) in eighth with a 10.97. Freshman
Jaden Alexander (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) and sophomore
Anthony Ferrante (Prior Lake, Minn.) ran in for a photo finish, as Alexander crossed the line in 11.041 for ninth and Ferrante in 11.045 for 10th.
Sophomore
Anthony Sletta (St. James, Minn.) and junior
Connor O'Brien (Belle Plaine, Minn.) each finished third in their jumps, with Sletta leaping 6.78 meters in the long jump and O'Brien clearing 1.86 meters in the high jump.
Junior
Bashir Amoud (St. Paul, Minn./Harding) led SJU in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing third and first among DIII competitors with a personal best of 15.18 seconds. Freshman
Trae Headlee (Billings, Mont./Skyview) took fifth with a personal-best 15.49.
Freshman
Derek Guth (St. Peter, Minn.) placed sixth in the 400-meter dash (50.60) with the second-fastest DIII time of the day.
Ferrante added another top-10 time in the 200-meter dash with a personal-best 22.75 for seventh. Senior
Abdul Sesay (St. Paul, Minn./Harding) crossed the line just behind him with a 22.77.
Junior
Isak Brandt (Eagan, Minn.) finished fifth in the javelin behind Degen with a toss of 32.04, while junior
Rylan Turqueza (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/Radford) was eighth in the shot put (13.80 meters). Senior
Tom Kuriscak (Stillwater, Minn./St. Paul Academy) had a personal-best mark in the discus (41.17 meters) to finish ninth (second in DIII).
Three Johnnies – sophomore
Bailey Evans (Breckenridge, Minn.) and freshmen
Josh Pretasky (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) and
Charles VanGrinsven (Prior Lake, Minn.) – compete at the MIAC Decathlon this Thursday and Friday, April 30-May 1, at Carleton. Thursday's events (100-meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400-meter dash) begin at noon, followed by a 10:30 a.m. start Friday (110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, 1,500 meters).
Junior
Cole Stencel (Mapleton, Minn./Maple River) races in the 1,500 meters at Hamline's Meet of the Unsaintly, which begins at 5 p.m. Friday, May 1, at Klas Field in St. Paul. The rest of the team competes at St. Olaf's Ole Open at noon Saturday, May 2, in Northfield.
