7-Run Fifth Inning Fuels SJU to 10-1 Win in Trip's Finale

Box Score

DAVENPORT, Fla. – Saint John's baseball closed its Florida trip with a 10-1 win over Ramapo (N.J.) on Friday, March 20.

SJU (9-4 overall) erased a 1-0 deficit with seven runs – all with two outs – in the bottom of the fifth inning, including an inside-the-park grand slam from junior center fielder Riley Schwellenbach (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge).

Freshman Max Edwards (Rockford, Minn.) handled the rest, allowing an unearned run on two hits in eight innings. The reigning MIAC Pitcher of the Week struck out nine and walked two. He is now 3-0 with a 0.41 ERA, .120 opponent batting average and 24 strikeouts in 22 innings this spring.

The Roadrunners (7-5 overall) gained a 1-0 lead with the unearned run in the top of the third inning. The Johnnies left six runners on base through the first four inning and finally broke through with the crooked number in the fifth. Freshman shortstop Will Koeppen (Minnetonka, Minn.) walked and junior second baseman Alex Matchey (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) singled before the Ramapo shortstop made an error in an attempt to get Matchey with a forceout at second base to load the bases. Faced with two outs due to strikeouts, junior designated hitter Zach Helfmann (St. Louis Park, Minn.) broke the seal with a two-run single. Junior catcher Mason McCurdy (Lake Elmo, Minn./Stillwater Area) walked to reload the bases and sophomore left fielder Nolan Dumonceaux (Forest Lake, Minn.) coaxed a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-1. Schwellenbach then greeted the relief pitcher with an inside-the-park grand slam to left field.

McCurdy, who led SJU's bats with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, stroked a two-run single in the sixth inning and brought in the 10th run with a double-play ball in the eighth.

Senior southpaw Noah Jensen (St. Cloud, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning in relief.

The Johnnies travel to face Bethany Lutheran for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday, March 24, in Mankato.
