Bats Carry SJU to 10-4 Win

Box Score

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Saint John's baseball outscored Wisconsin-Stout 8-1 after the sixth inning en route to a 10-4 win on Tuesday, March 17.

The Johnnies (6-3 overall) totaled 17 hits, including three each from senior third baseman Reed Marquardt (Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes), junior first baseman Justin Brooks (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) and freshman shortstop Will Koeppen (Minnetonka, Minn.).

Marquardt's single in the eighth inning, his third of the game, enabled him to become the 40th Johnnie in program history to reach 100 career hits. He finished 3-for-6 with an RBI.

Koeppen reached base in all six trips to the plate – 3-for-3 with three walks – and drove in two runs from the leadoff spot. Brooks, meanwhile, went 3-for-5, including his first collegiate home run in the fourth inning, and scored three runs.

Junior Carter Theisen (Rosemount, Minn.) handled the rest by registering career highs in innings pitched (7.1) and strikeouts (9) for his first win of the season (1-1 record). He allowed the four runs on eight hits.

The Blue Devils (0-4 overall) loaded the bases with a hit and two free passes (a walk and a hit batsmen) to start the bottom of the third inning. Back-to-back singles made it 3-0 before Theisen struck out the next three batters to end the inning.

Brooks' two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning cut into Stout's lead and Marquardt tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI single in the seventh.

The Johnnies broke the game open with four runs on six hits in the eighth and tacked on three more with three singles in the ninth. A walk and two singles plated a run for the Blue Devils in the bottom of the eighth inning and ended Theisen's day. Senior Jack Dobesh (Edina, Minn.) made his fifth relief appearance of the season and tallied two strikeouts to end the threat.

Sophomore Ben Rudser (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to clinch the victory.

Junior center fielder Riley Schwellenbach (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) and junior catcher Will Wareham (Lakeville, Minn./North) both went 2-for-4 at the plate.

SJU meets another foe from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) – Wisconsin-La Crosse – for a 9-inning game at 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday, March 18, in Davenport, Fla.

The Johnnies' doubleheader against Worcester State (Mass.) scheduled for yesterday (Monday, March 16) was canceled due to weather. SJU now plays a doubleheader against Rutgers-Camden (N.J.), instead of one nine-inning game, starting at 4 p.m. ET on Thursday, March 19, in Winter Haven.
