A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: The Johnnie distance and mid-distance runners recorded five top five times at Division I Minnesota's Gopher Classic last Saturday (Feb. 7) in Minneapolis.

Junior Cole Stencel (Mapleton, Minn./Maple River) highlighted the afternoon with an SJU- and meet-record time of 4:10.42 in the mile. He surpassed the previous record of 4:11.75 set by John Mathews '03 as a senior in 2003.

Stencel's time will be logged as a 4:07.26 after a banked-track conversion. The converted time will serve as his qualifying mark for the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships since the national meet will be held on a banked surface, and currently ranks ninth in DIII.

Freshman Raegan Lopez (Lakeville, Minn./North) crossed the lined the second in the unseeded 3,000 meters with a personal-best 9:23.30.

Senior Owen Montreuil (Jordan, Minn.) added a third-place finish in 800 meters (1:55.02), beating four Division II runners.

Junior Max McCoy (Bennington, Neb./Mount Michael Benedictine) recorded the second-fastest DIII time in the 600 meters, finishing with a PR of 1:25.23 for fourth overall.

Senior Nick St. Peter (Maple Grove, Minn.) led three Johnnies in the 3,000 meters' top 10 with a fifth-place time of 8:50.07. Junior Vincent Kaluza (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) was eighth (9:00.51) and senior Jacob Malecha (Lonsdale, Minn./New Prague) finished 10th (9:02.90).

Junior Lars Molenkamp (Almere, Netherlands/Oostvaarders College) just missed the top five mark in the unseeded mile, taking sixth in 4:25.03.
