Third-Period Push Leads Hockey to 5-3 Win

Box Score

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's hockey scored a goal or more in each period, including three in the third, to win the series opener over Augsburg 5-3 on Thursday, Feb. 12, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

The two teams combined for five goals in the third period, of which only one was an even-strength tally. SJU (12-6-4, 7-3-3 MIAC) started the third with a 2-1 lead and was awarded its first power play of the game 36 seconds in, but the Auggies (6-13-3, 3-8-2 MIAC) tied the game with a shorthanded goal from Peyton Hanson 14 seconds later. The lead swung back into the Johnnies' favor when junior forward Jackson Borst (Edina, Minn.) found the back of the net during the same man advantage at the 2:07 mark.

Senior defenseman Michael Spinner (Prior Lake, Minn.) gave the home team a two-goal cushion with his third goal of the season with 7:20 elapsed in the third. With the goaltender pulled, Landon Parker cut Augsburg's deficit to 4-3 with an extra-attacker goal with 3:04 remaining.

Senior captain Mason Campbell (Rosemount, Minn.) ended the scoring with an empty-net goal on a long shot from his own defensive end just before time expired.

Freshman forward Jordan Larkee (St. Paul, Minn.) gave the Johnnies a 1-0 lead with 3:24 left in the first period. Larkee put away a nifty passing play with his linemates junior forward Cam Boche (Lakeville, Minn.) and freshman forward Carter Krenke (Bloomington, Minn.) on the zone entry.

Augsburg's Duke Kiffin tied it 58 seconds later with a shot from the slot that beat senior goaltender Jon Howe (Chanhassen, Minn.) over the shoulder.

Junior forward Logan Lyke (Medina, Minn.) scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season 18 seconds into the second period, gathering a rebound from junior defenseman Sam Berry's (St. Louis Park, Minn.) shot from the point.

Howe finished with 30 saves as Augsburg finished with a slight 33-31 edge in shots.

The two teams complete the series with a 7 p.m. puck drop on Friday, Feb.13, at the Ed Saugestad Rink in Minneapolis.
