A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Four Saint John's wrestlers reached the podium, including two runner-up performances, at Central's Under Armour Invitational last Saturday (Jan. 3) in Pella, Iowa.
Freshman
Carson Gellerman (Becker, Minn./Big Lake) and junior
Aidan Wayne (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) both went 2-1 to take second place at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively. Gellerman rattled off a pair of major decisions (13-4 and 9-0) before he himself was majored by Wisconsin-La Crosse's Sedeeq AlObaidi in the championship match. Gellerman is now 14-2 this season. Wayne, meanwhile, won his quarterfinal via disqualification after NAIA Dickinson State's Donivan Giangregorio was issued an illegal slam. He then recorded his team-leading ninth pin in the semifinals but was pinned by Greyson Gardner of Wartburg (Iowa) for the title. Wayne now boasts a 17-4 record.
Junior
Kris Castro (Simi Valley, Calif./Chaminade) bounced back from a 4-0 loss in his first match with three-straight victories to take fifth at 157 pounds. He advanced via forfeit in his first consolation bout and tallied two decisions – 7-2 and 11-5 – to finish his day.
Freshman
Isaac Hunter (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) claimed third place with a 3-1 record in the silver, 174-pound bracket. All three of his wins were of the bonus-point variety, two pins and a technical fall. He is now 12-4 this season.
THE LAST TIME: The last time SJU faced either Lakeland or Wisconsin-Platteville occurred at the 2015 Lakeland Duals. The Johnnies fell to the host Muskies by a 14-12 score and ended the day with a 35-11 defeat to the Pioneers. SJU returned to the Lakeland Duals in 2016, its last appearance at the competition, but wrestled Wisconsin-Eau Claire (L, 9-30); the Milwaukee School of Engineering (W, 40-7); and Chicago (W, 33-20).
