Saint John's soccer plays host to No. 3 Augsburg for a 4 p.m. game on Tuesday, Sept. 30, at Haws Field. – Live Stats | Live Video

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Gustavus Adolphus scored two second-half goals to defeat Saint John's (5-2-2, 1-2-0 MIAC) on Saturday (Sept. 27) in St. Peter. Cole Frazier scored what proved to be the game-winning goal for GAC just 1:34 into the second half and Simon Woods added an insurance goal early in the 72nd minute.

The Gusties posted a narrow 11-9 edge in shots (6-4 on goal) and a 9-4 mark in corner kicks. GAC received votes in last week's (Sept. 23) United Soccer Coaches top 25 poll.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Freshman forward Axel Martin (Lakeville, Minn./Rosemount) was named the MIAC Men's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week earlier today (Sept. 29). He led SJU to its first MIAC win of the season, 4-1 over St. Scholastica last Monday (Sept. 22), with a trio of goals. Martin scored twice in the first half and capped the game off with the Johnnies' fourth goal for his first collegiate hat trick – and his first conference points. The hat trick was the second for the Johnnies this season, after sophomore forward Ronan O'Connor (Woodbury, Minn./Hill-Murray) scored three Sept. 11 at North Central. The last time SJU had two players net a hat trick in the same season was 2004, when now-head coach Tudor Flintham '06 and Tyler Bosch '05 completed the trifecta. Martin has played all nine games this fall (eight starts) and is second on the team with 12 points (4g/4a).

ANOTHER NATIONALLY RANKED OPPONENT SATURDAY: The Johnnies follow tomorrow's tilt against No. 3 Augsburg by hosting No. 19 St. Olaf (8-1-2, 3-0-0 MIAC) at 12:30 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 4).

A LOOK AT THE AUGGIES: Augsburg (10-0, 2-0 MIAC) remained undefeated with a 3-0 shutout at Wisconsin-River Falls last Monday (Sept. 22). Senior forward Carver Tierney, a transfer from Division I Mercyhurst, leads the team in goals (10) and points (24), while senior midfielder Mitchel Munzing (5g/6a) and senior forward Mizael Harris (6g/2a) are also in double digits for points. Freshman Christian Hodges has all 10 decisions in net with seven shutouts, a 0.20 GAA and a .957 save percentage (45 saves).

LAST FALL: Senior defender Carter Hermanson's (St. Paul, Minn./Holy Angels) first goal of the season with 23.8 seconds remaining gave Saint John's a 2-2 draw at Augsburg last Oct 2 (2024) in Minneapolis. Charging up the right side, McKaid Schotzko centered the ball from 30 yards out and found Hermanson at the top of the box. Hermanson stuck out his right leg to stop the ball in the air, spun to his left and chipped the ball with his left foot to the back of the net for the game-tying tally and fourth collegiate goal.

Tomas Menna gave Augsburg a 2-1 lead in the 55th minute. Mizael Harris opened the game's scoring for the home team in the 27th minute.

Senior forward Alex Bowman (Elk River, Minn./Rogers) tied the game at 1-1 for SJU with his third goal of the season on a direct header off a corner kick from Brendan Hainey with 2:49 left in the first half.

Goalkeeper Evan Siefken '25 made four saves in the draw. The two goals allowed were a season high.

The Auggies registered a 19-16 edge in shots (6-5 on goal), though the visitors totaled a 4-1 margin in corner kicks.

SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 43-13-12 all-time against the Auggies on the soccer pitch, including a 23-5-5 record in Collegeville. The two teams have played to a draw each of the last three meetings overall.
