Day 1 Results

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Saint John's track and field is in first place following day one of the 2025 MIAC Outdoor Championships held Friday, May 9, at Macalester Stadium.

The Johnnies won two events and recorded five All-MIAC (top three) finishes on the day. SJU sits in first place with 84.5 points, followed by St. Olaf (55), Bethel (49), Concordia (37.5), Gustavus Adolphus (36) and St. Scholastica (20).

Freshman Max Reis (West Fargo, N.D./Spectrum) won the long jump with a program-record mark of 7.33 meters (24 feet, 3/4 inches), the 10th-best in NCAA Division III this spring. He fouled on his first two attempts and registered the distance on his final jump, which surpassed the previous record of 7.30 meters set by Erik Diley in 2008. Reis passed on his final three tries in order to prepare for the 100-meter dash prelims.

Freshman Anthony Sletta (St. James, Minn.) earned his first All-MIAC honor with a third-place distance of 6.92 meters on his sixth and final attempt, and senior Zach Schaffer (Chaska, Minn.) was next in fourth (6.87 meters).

Senior Jackson McDowell (Arapahoe, Colo./Centennial) won his second-consecutive outdoor title in the high jump with a season-best height of 2.07 meters, which is good for eighth-best in Division III. Senior Alec Ungar (Eden Prairie, Minn./Chanhassen) tied for fifth (1.87 meters) and senior Max Lelwica (Brainerd, Minn.), last week's MIAC champion in the decathlon, just missed scoring in a tie for ninth place (1.87 meters).

The Johnnies' 4x800-meter relay (Montreuil, Molenkamp, St. Peter, McCoy) finished second (7:42.96) and sophomore Cole Stencel (Mapleton, Minn./Maple River) claimed third place in the 1,500 meters (3:52.99). Junior Nick St. Peter (Maple Grove, Minn.) was less than three seconds behind Stencel in seventh (3:55.24).

Senior Jaeden Frost (Omro, Wis.) placed fourth in the hammer throw with a mark of 50.17 meters and senior Joe Mensen (Hudson, Wis./Hill-Murray) was sixth (49.24 meters).

Senior Eamon Cavanaugh (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) and sophomore Vincent Kaluza (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) ended the night in fifth (31:58.68) and sixth (32:10.77), respectively, in the 10,000 meters.

Freshman Grady Minnerath (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) closed the team's scoring for day one with an eighth-place mark in the discus (43.59 meters).

Prelims (for Saturday's finals)
Senior Kevin Arthur (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) won the 100-meter dash prelim in 10.35 seconds, Reis was second (10.46) and sophomore Kieran Murnan (Lakeville, Minn./Holy Angels) was eighth (10.89). The 100-meter dash final is scheduled for 3:20 p.m. Saturday.

Arthur also qualified for 200-meter dash final – set for 4:10 p.m. Saturday – with a second-place time of 21.05 seconds, 0.01 from Bethel's Grant Nelson in first. 

Junior Owen Montreuil (Jordan, Minn.) recorded the third-fastest time in the 800-meter prelims (1:55.12) and senior Tommy Allen (Woodbury, Minn./St. Paul Academy) was seventh (1:55.80). The 800-meter final is 3:35 p.m. Saturday.

Lelwica qualified for tomorrow's final at 2:45 p.m. in the 110-meter hurdles with the fourth-best time of 15.14 seconds and sophomore Bashir Amoud (St. Paul, Minn./Harding) also qualified in ninth (15.67).

Sophomore Cooper Smith (Alvarado, Minn./East Grand Forks) took fifth in the 400-meter hurdle prelims (55.46), while freshmen Jacob Sterk (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) and Bode Russell (Buffalo, Minn.) will join him in the 3:50 p.m. final in eighth (56.80) and ninth (56.84), respectively.

The second and final day of the meet begins with field events at noon Saturday, May 10, followed by action on the track at 1:30 p.m.
