NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Saint John's baseball jumped back to the win column in fine fashion with a doubleheader sweep at Carleton, 5-3 and 16-5 in seven innings, on Tuesday, April 8.
The Johnnies (14-9, 4-2 MIAC) took advantage of six errors and 15 free passes (10 walks and five hit batsmen) by Carleton (6-10, 0-6 MIAC), which entered the day with a .965 fielding percentage this season.
The doubleheader was originally scheduled for last Tuesday (April 1) and was postponed due to last week's wintry weather.
Game 1 – Saint John's 5, Carleton 3
Senior second baseman
Ryan Janzen (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) broke a 0-0 score with an RBI triple that scored sophomore designated hitter
Zach Helfmann (St. Louis Park, Minn.), who reached base on a wild-pitch strikeout in the top of the fourth. The Knights, however, plated three runs to gain a 3-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning.
SJU gained the lead for good with three two-out runs in the top of the sixth inning. Sophomore
Alex Matchey (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) cut the deficit to 3-2 with a pinch-hit, RBI single and a throwing error from the pitcher to first base brought in two more. The Johnnies scored another unearned run with two outs for some insurance in the seventh.
Sophomore
Carter Theisen (Rosemount, Minn.) went the distance and improved to 4-1 with the win. He allowed the three runs (two earned) on three hits and struck out five.
Game 2 – Saint John's 16, Carleton 5 (7 inn.)
Senior third baseman
Joe Becker (New Prague, Minn.) tripled and scored on an RBI single from senior first baseman
Owen Best (Aurora, Colo./Regis Jesuit) to give the visitors a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning before erupting for a pair of crooked numbers in the second and third. The Johnnies plated seven runs on five hits in the second inning and added six more on four hits, after Carleton cut the deficit to 8-4 in the bottom half of the second, in the third inning.
Doubles from Best and junior right fielder
Brendan Hemr (Blaine, Minn./Centennial), and a sacrifice fly from sophomore left fielder
Alex Matchey (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area), ended the Johnnies' scoring in the fourth inning.
Sophomore
Hunter Hoen (Belle Plaine, Minn.) tallied the win after he allowed the five runs on five hits in four innings. Junior
Jack Dobesh (Edina, Minn.) earned the three-inning save.
Janzen went 4-for-7 with three runs scored and three RBI to lead SJU's bats, while Becker scored five runs and reached base safely seven times thanks to a 2-for-4 performance with four walks and a hit-by-pitch. Best and Helfmann totaled three hits apiece. Helfmann recorded four RBI in game two, including a bases-clearing double in the third inning.
The Johnnies return home to host Hamline (5-15, 0-2 MIAC) at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday, April 9) and Minnesota-Morris (9-14, 6-3 UMAC) for a nine-inning non-conference contest at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at Haugen Field at Becker Park in Collegeville.
