MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Saint John's track and field started its busy week on Wednesday, April 23, at Division I Minnesota's Gary Wilson Invitational.
The Johnnies did not have a competitor in the discus, hammer throw, high jump, javelin, shot put, 4x100-meter relay, 4x400-meter relay or 5,000 meters.
Senior
Kevin Arthur (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) led the way for SJU with a third-place and season-best time of 21.04 seconds in the 200-meter dash. The time is the fourth-fastest in NCAA Division III this season.
Sophomore
Cole Stencel (Mapleton, Minn./Maple River) finished fourth, first among Division III runners, out of 54 participants in the 1,500 meters (3:53.95), while junior
Kole Guth (St. Peter, Minn.) and sophomore
Andrew Withuski (Wahpeton, N.D.) tied for fourth in the pole vault (4.43 meters).
Sophomore
Vincent Kaluza (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) and junior
Jacob Malecha (Lonsdale, Minn./New Prague) claimed fifth (9:32.53) and sixth (9:40.97), respectively, in the steeplechase and sophomore
Bangaly Kaba (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) was sixth in the triple jump (12.99 meters).
A pair of Johnnies finished eighth in their events, overall, but fared much better among those from Division III. Sophomore
Cooper Smith (Alvarado, Minn./East Grand Forks) was first among Division III competitors in the 400-meter hurdles (55.07), while senior
Zach Schaffer (Chaska, Minn.) took third in the long jump (6.74 meters).
The Johnnies' 4x800-meter relay begins the three-day Drake Relays at 4:44 p.m. Thursday, April 24, in Des Moines, Iowa.
