SJU Records Strong Performances Saturday at Three Meets

Bethel Results | Mankato Results | Oshkosh Results

OSHKOSH, Wis. – Five Saint John's student-athletes wrapped up the two-day Wisconsin-Oshkosh Titan Invitational on Saturday, April 12. Members of the Johnnies' track and field team also competed Saturday at Bethel and Division II MSU-Mankato, where they recorded a number of national-worthy performances.

At Oshkosh, senior Jackson McDowell (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) won the high jump with a mark of 2.06 meters. He tied with Simon Dominic of Division II Wisconsin-Parkside but took first because he cleared the first four heights on his first attempt and Dominic needed a second try with the bar at 1.98 meters.

Junior Mitchell Degen (Brainerd, Minn.) finished second in the javelin, first among collegiate participants, with a throw of 54.91 meters and McDowell was next in third (54.79m).

Senior Max Lelwica (Brainerd, Minn.) finished second out of 14 competitors in the two-day decathlon with 6,719 points, 420 from Oshkosh's Charlie Nolan in first place (7,139). He started the day second with a personal-best time of 15.12 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles and closed the competition with second-place marks in the pole vault (4.05m) and javelin (48.07m), and won the 1,500 meters (4:44.56).

Freshman Bailey Evans (Breckenridge, Minn.) claimed ninth with 5,511 points and senior Anthony Thurk (St. Bonifacius, Minn./Waconia) was 11th (5,320 points). Evans claimed second in the discus thanks to a throw of 35.55 meters in his third and final attempt. Thurk, meanwhile, tied for fourth in the pole vault (3.55m) and placed fifth in the discus (33.82m) and 1,500 meters (5:14.00).

Bethel Invitational
SJU's pole vaulters competed Saturday at the Bethel Invitational, where sophomore Andrew Withuski (Wahpeton, N.D.) tied for second out of 23 vaulters with a personal-best height of 4.55 meters. Junior Kole Guth (St. Peter, Minn.) was fifth (4.25m).

MSU-Mankato Open
Senior Kevin Arthur (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) won the 100-meter dash in 10.32 seconds, which was 0.01 from his personal best and is tied for the fifth-fastest in NCAA Division III so far this spring. Freshman Max Reis (West Fargo, N.D./Spectrum) followed Arthur in fourth with a time of 10.56 seconds, which is tied for 18th nationally.

The sprinting duo also contributed to SJU's third-place 4x100-meter relay team (Hansen, Arthur, Murnan, Reis) and its time of 40.83 seconds, the third-fastest in Division III.

Senior Zach Schaffer (Chaska, Minn.) claimed fifth with a leap of 7.12 meters in the long jump  and sophomore Cooper Smith (Alvarado, Minn./East Grand Forks) was fifth, first among Division III competitors, in the 400-meter hurdles (55.95).

Freshman Grady Minnerath (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) took sixth in the discus (44.88m) and seventh in the shot put (14.52m).

The Johnnies return home to host the CSB/SJU Invitational at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 17, in Clemens Stadium.
