Lelwica Leads SJU Friday in Wisconsin

OSHKOSH, Wis. – Three Saint John's student-athletes competed in the first five events of the two-day decathlon on Friday, April 11, at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Titan Invitational.

Senior Max Lelwica (Brainerd, Minn.) is currently fourth out of 14 competitors with 3,496 points, 315 from Oshkosh's Charlie Nolan in first place (3,811). He finished second in the shot put (11.93 meters), third in the 400-meter dash (51.59) and fourth in the high jump (1.88 meters).

Freshman Bailey Evans (Breckenridge, Minn.) is 10th with 3,053 points and senior Anthony Thurk (St. Bonifacius, Minn./Waconia) is 13th (2,685 points). Evans' best events were the shot put, where he claimed fourth (11.31 meters), and a fifth-place time of 11.36 seconds in the 100-meter dash.

Thurk won the shot put with a personal-best toss of 12.58 meters, but did not clear his first height of 1.76 meters in the high jump and slipped from fourth place to 13th overall.

The decathlon's final five events begin Saturday with the 110-meter hurdles at 10:15 a.m., followed by the discus (11 a.m.), pole vault (12:15 p.m.), javelin (2:15 p.m.) and 1,500 meters (4 p.m.).

Two other teammates are scheduled to join the SJU trio in senior Jackson McDowell (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) is scheduled to compete in the high jump and 10:30 a.m. and junior Mitchell Degen (Brainerd, Minn.) in the javelin at 12:30 p.m.

Wisconsin-Platteville Invitational
Eight Johnnies raced within a large field of competitors – eight heats – Friday night in the 5,000 meters at Wisconsin-Platteville. Sophomore Cole Stencel (Mapleton, Minn./Maple River) led the way in 88th out of 274 runners with a time of 14:52.53. Senior Eamon Cavanaugh (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) was next in 101st (14:55.32) and sophomore Vincent Kaluza (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) was 112th (14:57.97).

SJU's pole vaulters compete at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Bethel Invitational, while the rest of the team takes their talents to the Division II MSU-Mankato Open at noon.
